Basic Lip Balm

This is my favorite lip balm recipe. It smooths and heals dry lips from sun and climate damage. It’s made from hydrating natural oils and beeswax to seal in moisture. Herbal infusions and essential oils may be used to enhance the healing properties. You can make it basic or customize it to fit your needs.

Basic Recipe

• 2 tablespoons sweet almond oil or other oil
• 2 teaspoons beeswax
• 1 Vitamin E capsule (400 IU) or 1/4 teaspoon oil (opt.)

• essential oil or variations (opt.) (see below)

Place the oil and wax in a heatproof cup (such as a heavy glass measuring cup.) Poke a hole in the Vitamin E capsule and squeeze its liquid into the oil and wax mixture. Place the heatproof cup in a pot of water on the stove and heat on low just until the wax melts.

I like to use an electric candle warmer. It’s easy and a small glass jar or measuring cup works great, but it does melt a little slower.

If you want a softer balm, add a few drops of oil. To make harder, add a little beeswax. Test by dipping a cold spoon in the hot mixture for the desired hardness.

Remove immediately from heat. Pour the liquid into a small jar or lip balm jar or tube. Allow to cool (it will solidify) before using.

Customize It

substitute any carrier oil for almond oil (such as olive, avocado, aloe, coconut, argon, etc.)

substitute 1 teaspoon shea butter for 1 teaspoon of the beeswax (will be softer)
add 1/2 teaspoon vegetable glycerin for extra moisture
add a few drops castor oil for more shine
add powdered herb for color such as beet, alkanet, carrot, etc. (add until desired shade)
honey (add when removed from heat, blend well)

Note: Buy your oils, butter, and glycerin at the health food store, supermarket, or online such as Etsy.
